Dolby Pro-Logic systems are usually designed around one center channel, two front speakers, a subwoofer, and two rear speakers normally performing in mono sound for effects. Dolby Digital (a.k.a. AC-3 and 5.1) goes one step further in steering the sound to the appropriate speaker, using one center channel, two front speakers, one or two subwoofers and two rear speakers operating independently as the sound track was intended.
